Nigeria Participates as Interpol AI Operation Flags 126 Suspected Foreign Terrorist Fighters
Nigeria joined 10 other countries in Interpol’s AI-assisted counter-terrorism operation, Operation Shams II, which identified 126 suspected foreign terrorist fighters from online visual material linked to jihadist groups. Interpol said officers extracted 108,076 facial images and reduced them to 6,362 unique images for checks through its facial-recognition system. AI tools and automated scripts were used to collect, sort and quality-check the images, while trained investigators reviewed and verified the results. The operation also used cryptocurrency-tracing tools to investigate possible illicit financing and engaged online gaming industry representatives on concerns about youth radicalisation. Interpol said thousands of images are still being processed and could produce further leads for investigations and judicial cases.
