Boat Capsizes in Makurdi: Pregnant Woman, Six Children Among 11 Feared Dead
Eleven people died after a boat capsized on a river in Makurdi Local Government Area, Benue State, on the evening of June 13. The victims included a pregnant woman, six children and four other adults returning from a burial ceremony when heavy rain and strong winds overturned the vessel. A vigilante commander said mourners had crossed from Daududawada island to Wadata for a funeral earlier in the day. With over 40 passengers on board, the boat sank around 7 p.m. Four bodies have been recovered and buried so far, while divers and local volunteers continue searching for the seven missing persons. One survivor lost her baby during the chaos. She carried her infant on her back but struggled to swim to safety and could not save the child. The affected communities remain in mourning as rescue efforts press on.
