Edo Assembly Race: Women Make Up Less Than 10% of Candidates
Men make up 148 of the 164 candidates cleared to contest Edo State House of Assembly seats, according to INEC’s final list. Only 16 candidates are women, leaving female representation at 9.76% across the state’s 24 constituencies. The figures highlight continuing barriers to women’s participation in elective politics, including limited access to party structures and campaign opportunities. Egor Constituency has the highest concentration of female candidates, while several constituencies have none. The list also shows a wide age range among contestants. The youngest candidate is 26, while the oldest is 66. No candidate was listed in the persons-with-disabilities category.
