NMA Awka Offers Free Surgeries, Seeks Tax Relief for Private Hospitals
The Nigerian Medical Association, Awka Zone, marked its 2026 Physicians’ Week with free medical screenings and surgeries for selected patients, including treatment for hernias, prostate-related conditions and uterine fibroids. The association said some of the operations would normally cost between ₦1 million and ₦3 million. At the closing luncheon and awards ceremony, NMA Awka Chairman, Prof. Timothy Mbaeri, urged the Anambra State Government to harmonise taxes and levies imposed on private health facilities. He said repeated regulatory payments raise operating costs and can make treatment less affordable for patients. The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, said the government was discussing a coordinated system for healthcare regulation. He also called for cooperation with doctors to identify and shut down illegal health facilities, while speakers renewed calls for better welfare and working conditions to reduce the migration of Nigerian doctors abroad.
