Billy Joel Pauses Performances and Stops Driving After Brain Disorder Diagnosis
Billy Joel says he has stopped driving and paused live performances after being diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus, a condition caused by fluid buildup in the brain. The singer said the condition has affected his balance, memory, vision and hearing. Doctors advised him to avoid the physical strain, loud sound and intense lighting of live concerts while he undergoes further medical evaluations. Joel previously cancelled tour dates after a fall during a Connecticut performance. He later had surgery to implant a shunt to relieve pressure and says his memory, balance and cognitive function have improved. He is also auctioning more than 70 motorcycles from his collection because he can no longer ride safely.
