ICPC Grants Nasir El-Rufai Bail to Attend Mother’s Funeral

ICPC Grants Nasir El-Rufai Bail to Attend Mother’s Funeral

Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai has been granted temporary bail by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission on compassionate grounds. The release allows him to attend the funeral rites of his late mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, who passed away in Cairo. The bail approval was confirmed by an aide and announced by his son, Bashir El-Rufai, in a post on social media. Bashir thanked well-wishers and criticized the handling of his father’s detention. El-Rufai has been in ICPC custody since February 18, facing allegations of financial misconduct, including conversion of public property and money laundering. He pleaded not guilty when arraigned in Kaduna. He also faces separate charges by the Department of State Services over alleged unlawful interception of communications under the Cybercrimes Act. His next court dates are set for March 31, 2026, on bail, and April 23, 2026, for the DSS case.

It seems the commission acts faster when public sympathy is strong, but what about less prominent individuals?

While attending a funeral is understandable, we still have to question whether bail for influential figures creates a double standard.

Those seeking compassionate bail should gather comprehensive documentation and secure strong legal support to avoid unnecessary delays.
