The Cost of Contraceptives in Nigeria Is Pricing Many Women Out of Choice
For Nigerians earning around the ₦70,000 minimum wage, contraception can be another difficult monthly expense alongside rent, food and transport. Pills, condoms, injections, implants and IUDs all carry different costs, and prices can vary sharply by brand, clinic and location. Condoms may cost hundreds or several thousand naira, while injections require repeat visits every three months. IUD prices can range from about ₦25,000 to more than ₦300,000. Transport costs, consultation fees and fear of judgement at pharmacies can make access even harder for women. Studies of family-planning outlets have found that private facilities often charge more than public ones for similar services. Although some state initiatives have reduced service fees, affordability remains a major barrier for millions of women who want modern family-planning options.
