2027 Presidency: North-West and South-West Hold 43% of Nigeria’s Registered Voters
INEC’s 2026 voter register shows that the North-West and South-West account for 44.7 million of Nigeria’s 103.4 million registered voters. The two regions therefore hold more than 43% of the national electorate ahead of the 2027 presidential election. The North-West has 25.08 million registered voters, the highest of any geopolitical zone. The South-West follows with 19.61 million, while the North-Central has about 16.97 million voters. The figures underline the importance of both regions to President Bola Tinubu and opposition candidates. However, results from the 2023 election showed that neither zone is guaranteed to any candidate, with Peter Obi winning Lagos, Atiku Abubakar winning Kaduna and Rabiu Kwankwaso leading in Kano. Candidates will still need broad national support to meet the constitutional requirement of winning the most votes and at least 25% of votes in two-thirds of the states and the FCT. INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan also said voters, not algorithms, will decide the outcome of the 2027 elections.
