The Confederation of African Football has selected Nigerian referee Yemisi Akintoye as a match official for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. A FIFA-listed official since 2021, Akintoye earned her appointment after passing rigorous medical, physical, and technical tests. She also officiated at WAFCON 2024 in Morocco. Sir Kelechi Mejuobi, president of the Nigerian Football Referees Association, hailed the appointment as a proud moment and said it underscores the growing recognition of Nigerian referees at major tournaments. WAFCON 2026 is scheduled to run from July 26 to August 16 in Morocco.

It's interesting she's been FIFA-listed since 2021, but that doesn't guarantee she's handled high-pressure continental matches before.

I'm not sure this is the best move if CAF wants more diverse officiating; maybe another emerging referee deserved the spot.

Fellow referees should study her fitness and technical preparation methods to improve their own chances for similar CAF appointments.
