French Students Shut Schools in Nationwide Protest Over Teacher Shortages and Overcrowding
Thousands of French secondary-school students have staged protests over teacher shortages, overcrowded classrooms, deteriorating buildings and long school days. Demonstrations that began around Paris have spread to cities including Lille, Lyon, Marseille, Nantes and Bordeaux. France’s Education Ministry said more than 1,000 high schools were affected by strikes or protests on October 1, including 222 school blockades. Students say staffing gaps have left some subjects without regular teachers, while classes of up to 40 pupils and poor facilities have worsened learning conditions. The protests have disrupted or closed hundreds of schools. Some demonstrations have led to clashes with police and property damage, while teachers and parents have joined students in some areas. The government says it recognises some concerns but has condemned violence and faces pressure to improve conditions in public schools.
