UK Removes Nigeria From Teacher Qualification Route for England Schools

Teachers trained in Nigeria can no longer use the UK’s Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) application route for many schools in England. The change took effect on September 9 and also affects teachers trained in Ghana and India. The UK Department for Education said eligible countries must have a national regulator that can verify a teacher’s professional standing and authenticated work references. It said more than 70% of applications from Nigeria and Ghana included references sent through public email services instead of official school email addresses, making verification more difficult. Applicants previously needed a valid passport, a degree equivalent to a UK bachelor’s degree, recognised teacher registration, at least nine months of post-qualification teaching experience and evidence they can teach children aged five to 16. Affected teachers may still explore other routes into teaching in England, as individual schools can consider alternative qualifications.
