What Frequent Shawarma Eating Could Mean for Your Health
Shawarma can be an enjoyable occasional meal, but eating it frequently may increase exposure to processed meat, excess salt, calories and creamy sauces. Experts say these ingredients can contribute to long-term risks such as high blood pressure, obesity and colorectal cancer when they become a regular part of a person’s diet. Food hygiene is also a major concern. A health investigation in parts of Lagos found practices that could expose meat, vegetables and sauces to contamination, while a study of ready-to-eat foods in Lagos detected bacteria in some shawarma samples. Contaminated food can cause symptoms such as diarrhoea, vomiting and stomach pain. The advice is not to avoid shawarma completely. Choose vendors who handle and store food properly, limit processed meats and heavy sauces, and avoid making shawarma an almost-daily habit.
