I’m Glad Messi and Ronaldo Have Left European Football
I miss the era when European football felt more balanced and every Champions League team had a genuine star. Clubs such as Porto, Monaco, Deportivo La Coruña, Feyenoord, Beşiktaş and Olympiacos could compete, while flair players from Brazil and elsewhere made the game exciting. In my view, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo changed football’s priorities. Their extraordinary goal records made goalscoring the main standard for judging greatness, while flair, creativity and contributions from defenders and goalkeepers received less attention. Messi’s 91 goals in 2012 and Ronaldo’s consistent scoring numbers raised the bar to an almost impossible level. I believe this has made it harder for players such as N’Golo Kanté and Kevin De Bruyne to get the recognition they deserve for their impact beyond goals. I am ready to see new faces compete for top-scorer awards and the Ballon d’Or.
