President Tinubu Honours Democracy Champions with National Awards

President Bola Tinubu has conferred national honours on individuals who faced persecution, exile, incarceration and solitary confinement in the struggle for Nigeria’s democracy. Among those recognised are Babajide Otitoju, Joe Igbokwe, Sam Omatseye, Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin and other activists, lawyers, journalists and former political prisoners whose sacrifices helped secure democratic governance. The ceremony celebrated 35 honourees, including posthumous awards for Dr Arthur Nwankwo and Ben Charles-Obi, in acknowledgement of their enduring contributions to freedom and justice.

Honouring these activists is positive, but it feels more like a political statement than genuine reconciliation with past injustices.
