Global Fund Partners Seek Stronger Action Against HIV, TB and Malaria in Ebonyi
Partners implementing the Global Fund’s community-led monitoring project have called for stronger coordination among government, health workers, civil society, development partners, the private sector and the media to tackle HIV, tuberculosis and malaria in Nigeria. At a briefing in Abakaliki, the TB Network said poverty, stigma, discrimination, transport costs, distance to health facilities and out-of-pocket expenses continue to prevent many people from seeking timely care. The group urged governments to expand health insurance coverage and improve equitable access to quality services. The project, which operates across the 36 states and the FCT, uses community feedback to identify gaps such as inadequate infrastructure, gender inequality and barriers to treatment. Ebonyi’s primary healthcare agency also said the state has approved the recruitment of health workers across its 13 local government areas to strengthen primary healthcare centres. The partners also called for collective action against gender-based violence, including domestic abuse, rape, forced marriage and female genital mutilation, while urging support and protection for survivors.
