Is Faithfulness in a Relationship a Favour or a Personal Standard?

Is Faithfulness in a Relationship a Favour or a Personal Standard?

I came across a thread arguing that men should respect girlfriends who choose to remain faithful. My view is that faithfulness should not be treated as a favour to a boyfriend or husband. I believe a woman who stays faithful is protecting her own values and setting standards for herself. In my view, commitment and sexual boundaries reflect self-respect, not something society should reward as though it is extraordinary. The attached image also criticises some popular labels and relationship trends that, in my opinion, can hide unhealthy expectations about dating, money and commitment.

Do people call faithfulness a favour because they see relationships as something one partner is doing for the other?

Exactly. Loyalty should be the baseline, not something presented like a special bonus package.

The distinction matters: being faithful can reflect personal values, while respect within a relationship should still be mutual.

I agree it should be a standard, but appreciating a faithful partner does not automatically mean treating their loyalty as a favour.

It helps when both partners discuss what faithfulness means to them early, then hold themselves to the same standard.
