Rennes Join Race to Sign Super Eagles Defender Emmanuel Fernandez

Rennes Join Race to Sign Super Eagles Defender Emmanuel Fernandez

Stade Rennes have entered talks to sign Nigerian centre-back Emmanuel Fernandez from Rangers. The 24-year-old joined Rangers last summer for around £3.5 million and quickly became a key figure in their defence. Fernandez won Rangers’ Player of the Season award and earned a place in the Scottish Premiership Team of the Season after scoring five goals in 27 league appearances. He has also made three appearances for Nigeria. French media report Fernandez is one of three central defenders on Rennes’ shortlist as they compete with clubs like Feyenoord, Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund. Rangers are expected to demand a significant profit for their standout defender.

Do you think Fernandez will adapt to Rennes' playing style as quickly as he did at Rangers?

I agree his pace and reading of the game should help him slot into Rennes' system smoothly. He's got the tools.

Rennes are taking a risk signing a defender after just one standout season at Rangers.

I'm not convinced he'll replicate that form in Ligue 1; French football's demands are quite different.

Rennes should integrate him gradually, pairing him with experienced centre-backs to ease his transition.
