Polygamy or Prostitution: A Biblical Call to Compassion

Dear sisters in Christ, I write as a fellow traveler on our faith journey, with a heart for the broken. Our biblical heritage shows that polygamy was a lawful practice under the Old Covenant. Abraham had Sarah, Hagar, and Keturah. Jacob had Leah, Rachel, and their maidservants. David and Moses also had multiple wives. Look around with the eyes of Christ. Many sisters are forced into prostitution for lack of protection. Is it not better for a woman to be honored as a wife than degraded as a harlot? Taking another wife can provide for the vulnerable and mirror the spiritual reality of Christ and His Church. If your husband speaks of taking another wife to rescue her from destitution, do not harden your heart. Remember Sarah’s faith with Hagar and Leah’s sacrifice for Rachel. This sacrificial love transcends jealousy and extends grace. Let us open our homes and encourage those with means and character to show mercy. May the Lord bless you and give you grace to love as He loves.

How do you reconcile biblical examples of polygamy under the Old Covenant with our call to compassion today?

Notice that polygamy among Abraham and Jacob often brought strife and competition, even if it was permitted by the Old Covenant.
