Why NGX’s Biggest Companies Are Driving the Market—and Why Patience Matters
The Nigerian Exchange’s All-Share Index has reached historic highs, while a small group of large companies accounts for a substantial share of market capitalisation. Critics say this concentration masks weaker performance elsewhere. But concentration is common in markets around the world, and the biggest companies can shape an index because of their scale, earnings and investor interest. I believe the NGX’s leading firms are not a flaw in the market. They provide much of its liquidity and draw institutional investment. Investors should still assess valuation, earnings quality and their own time horizon rather than assume that every large company is automatically a good buy. The sharper criticism is aimed at speculative trading in thinly traded penny stocks. When liquidity dries up, investors who bought on hopes of quick gains may struggle to sell. Technical analysis and social-media promotion cannot replace careful research. An index excluding the largest companies could offer another perspective, but it would measure a different part of the market—not necessarily reveal hidden strength. My view is that patience, selectivity and due diligence matter more than chasing the next short-term surge.
