Judas: Betrayer or Fulfillment of a Divine Plan?
I’ve been thinking about Judas and his role in Jesus’s story. Did he truly betray Jesus or simply play out a part that was foretold? Jesus predicted his betrayal in the Gospel of Matthew. If the outcome was certain, could Judas have made a different choice? Without his action, there would have been no arrest, no crucifixion and no salvation narrative. In the Gospel of John, Jesus tells Judas, “What you’re about to do, do quickly.” That instruction raises questions. Was Jesus stopping Judas or guiding him to fulfil what was necessary? I’m not suggesting Judas deserves praise. But if his actions were essential to the story, why is he the only one we condemn? Are we judging a traitor or blaming a man who followed his role?
