California Recognises Eid Holidays, but Workers and Schools Will Not Automatically Close

California has added Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha to its official state holiday calendar under a new law signed by Governor Gavin Newsom on September 27, 2026. The change does not give every worker or student two extra days off. Eligible state employees may use existing vacation, annual leave, compensatory time or personal holiday credits to observe either Eid, subject to their employment agreements. Public schools and community colleges may also close for Eid where local agreements allow it. The law is intended to make religious observance easier for Muslim students and workers, especially as Eid dates change each year under the Islamic lunar calendar.
