FG Commissions 3MW Solar Plant to Improve Power Supply at Yakubu Gowon University
The Federal Government has commissioned a 3MW solar hybrid power project at Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja, to provide more reliable electricity for classrooms, laboratories, research, digital services and other campus operations. The facility includes a 3.3MW solar array, 3MW AC output capacity and 2MWh of battery storage. It is expected to reduce disruption caused by unstable power supply and support learning, research and online academic activities. The project, delivered under Phase II of the Energising Education Programme, also includes 388 solar-powered streetlights to improve campus security. About 300 students received renewable-energy training, while the government says it is considering an expansion of supply to student hostels and other parts of the campus. The Rural Electrification Agency says the wider programme has deployed more than 100MW of clean energy across 22 federal universities and three affiliated teaching hospitals.
