How Capital and Skilled Labour Can Grow Nigerian Artisan Businesses
I examine how collaboration between investors, merchants and skilled artisans can expand production and create stronger local markets. The key idea is that capital should support skilled producers, while merchants help them reach customers beyond their immediate communities. Using examples from England’s historic wool trade, Ariaria Market in Aba, Onitsha Main Market and my experience buying shoes from artisans in Ilesa, I argue that bulk purchasing can help artisans reinvest, reduce production costs and increase output. For this model to work, investors need viable returns, skilled workers need fair rewards, and there must be a large market for the finished products. I believe better financing and distribution for Nigerian artisans could significantly grow local manufacturing and trade.
