Israel Admits Striking Syrian Airbase Over Alleged Turkish Deployment
Israel says it carried out overnight airstrikes on a Syrian military airport near Aleppo, alleging that Syria was preparing to allow Turkish forces to deploy there. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said Israel had repeatedly warned Syria that a Turkish deployment would threaten its security. It said the strikes were intended to preserve an existing security arrangement between Israel and Syria. A Turkish official, however, denied that Ankara was seeking to establish a military presence at the airbase. The competing claims add to growing tensions involving Israel, Syria and Turkey.
