Abuja Lawyer Plans 220-Hour Reading Marathon on SGBV Laws Across 15 African Countries

Abuja-based lawyer Olubunmi Uluba says she will attempt a 220-hour reading marathon of sexual and gender-based violence laws from 15 African countries, including Nigeria. The initiative is aimed at improving public understanding of survivors’ rights, access to justice and institutional responsibilities. Uluba said the exercise will compare legal frameworks without ranking countries, identifying practices that could strengthen survivor protection and enforcement across Africa. Findings from the project are expected to feed into stakeholder dialogue and recommendations for policy and legislative reform. At the Abuja engagement, UN Women stressed that knowledge of SGBV laws helps citizens demand protection and enables institutions to enforce their duties. The FCT Administration said it has recorded more than 3,072 reported SGBV cases and plans to expand shelters, safe spaces, emergency support and community education.
