Musically, nu metal, heavy metal, groove metal, extreme metal and hard rock have been described as We Are Not Your Type. Commentators and band members have acknowledged We Are Not Your Type as one of the most experimental albums of Slipknot's career. Featuring moody instrumentals, the album has electronic, progressive rock, electronic music, heavy metal, and electro-industrial elements. The title is taken from the lyrics of the song All Out Life, which was released in 2018 as a standalone single and appears on the Japanese version of the album as a bonus track. The first Slipknot album to be released as an eight-member band is We Are Not Your Type, as their former percussionist Chris Fehn quit the band after suing the group for supposed unpaid royalties in March 2019.
