Catholic Bishops Told Tinubu Hard Truths, Not Political Praise

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria’s visit to President Bola Tinubu has stirred debate after the clerics raised concerns about hardship, insecurity, poverty and weak democratic institutions. Critics within the APC and the Presidency have described the bishops’ intervention as partisan. But the bishops’ role is not to praise those in power. Religious leaders have a duty to present the concerns of ordinary Nigerians, even when those concerns are uncomfortable. The government may dispute the bishops’ conclusions, but the issues they raised remain urgent: rising food and medicine costs, unemployment, struggling small businesses, public debt and persistent insecurity. Rather than attacking the messengers, Aso Rock should treat the meeting as an opportunity to respond with practical improvements.
