Abia State University has suspended Dr Agbai Johnson Ukwa, head of the Anatomy Department, amid allegations he extorted up to ₦1.5 million from each student to secure passing marks. Education consultant Alex Onyia first raised concerns in May, accusing Dr Agbai of demanding bribes before grading exams and calling for a thorough probe to restore sanity in Nigerian universities. On July 21, Onyia announced that ABSU has suspended Dr Agbai while the Abia State Government reviews mark sheets and results from the past five years. Some graduates’ results may be cancelled pending the outcome of the investigation.

It's surprising that a department head would risk reputation by allegedly demanding such huge sums from students.

Has the university shared any details about evidence supporting these extortion claims?

I'm not convinced we should accept the consultant's account without official evidence or student testimonies first.

The university needs clear guidelines and an anonymous reporting channel to prevent similar extortion in other departments.
