When Cult Wars Ruled ESUT: The Rise and Fall of Bombo
Do you remember Bombo, one of the most feared cultists on campus in the late 1990s? ESUT’s cult wars were among Nigeria’s most violent, pitting the 22/Black Beret (Apache Boys) against rival confraternities. The conflict erupted after Apache Boys killed Luke, a final-year engineering student, and later targeted his mother—violating the unwritten rule against harming relatives. This act sparked a brutal series of clashes across Enugu, elevating Bombo to infamy as a hitman and South-East coordinator of the AYEs. A peace meeting collapsed when Bombo threatened more bloodshed. In a coordinated retaliation, he was shot nine times outside the Law Faculty and three of his brothers were killed. The sheer ferocity of the 1999 ESUT war even drew coverage from international media. Decades later, no campus conflict in Nigeria has matched ESUT’s brutality. What other cult wars do you recall?
