Stray Military Gunfire Kills 14-Year-Old Girl at Home in Maiduguri
Amnesty International Nigeria has called on authorities to investigate the careless use of firearms by military personnel after a 14-year-old student was killed in her home. On 4 April, the girl was struck by a stray bullet during celebratory gunfire at a nearby wedding event. She had just finished applying henna in preparation for the family ceremony when the tragic shot hit her. A family friend explained that the victim lived with her parents in the UMTH quarters and was joyfully getting ready for a wedding when the fatal incident occurred. Amnesty International demands a transparent, impartial, and effective probe to hold those responsible to account and safeguard civilian lives.
