Ajao Estate Residents Reject Waste Fee Hike Over Irregular Refuse Collection
Residents of Ajao Estate, Lagos, have rejected a proposed increase in monthly waste collection charges, citing irregular refuse evacuation despite their continued payment of existing fees. They said notices of the new tariff were pasted on their doors without prior engagement. According to the community association chairman, waste trucks sometimes fail to visit the estate for one or two weeks, leaving refuse to pile up. The waste management company acknowledged disruptions and linked them to wider challenges with waste-disposal infrastructure in Lagos. Residents are demanding improved and reliable service before any increase is introduced, warning that accumulated refuse could create health risks, especially during the rainy season.
