Why INEC Faces Questions Over Adeyemi-Showunmi’s Electoral Operations Role
INEC is facing public questions over the reported redeployment of Oluyemi Titilayo Adeyemi-Showunmi to lead its Electoral Operations Department ahead of the 2027 general elections. The department coordinates key election logistics, including materials, polling arrangements and ad hoc staff. The scrutiny stems from the political activities of her husband, Segun Showunmi, who has declared interest in the Ogun governorship race and publicly backed President Bola Tinubu’s re-election. Critics, including Atiku Abubakar and HURIWA, have asked INEC to explain the criteria for the redeployments and the safeguards against political interference. Marriage to a politically active person does not automatically disqualify an INEC official under the Electoral Act. The law focuses on the official’s own political conduct and requires election personnel to act impartially. No public evidence has shown that Adeyemi-Showunmi acted improperly. However, INEC’s response is important for public confidence. Clear information on how the appointment was made and how the commission protects the independence of its Electoral Operations Department could help address concerns before the 2027 polls.
