Ghana Police Arrest Nigerian Suspect After Foiling Alleged Bank Robbery Plot in Accra
Ghana Police say they arrested a Nigerian suspect, Augustine Okechuku Maazi, after foiling an alleged planned robbery targeting GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank in Labone, Accra. Police said they acted on intelligence at about 10:45 a.m. on 13 August 2026 and found suspected gang members parked near the banks. One vehicle reportedly sped off, leading to a chase and Maazi’s arrest, while another occupant escaped. According to the police, occupants of a second vehicle exchanged fire with officers while trying to flee, leaving two suspects dead. Officers recovered a Toyota Highlander, a Hyundai Tucson and a blow pistol. Maazi remains in custody as investigations continue. The identities of the deceased suspects have not yet been released.
