FG Budgets ₦962.83bn for SUVs and Empowerment Projects as 2026 Borrowing Rises
The Federal Government earmarked ₦962.83 billion in the 2026 Appropriation Act for 39 SUVs and 2,579 empowerment projects, despite concerns over rising public debt and expanded borrowing plans. The allocation includes ₦15.13 billion for SUVs and ₦947.70 billion for empowerment programmes. Civic technology organisation Tracka said the sum is higher than the combined ₦960.27 billion allocated to seven federal ministries, including Industry, Trade and Investment; Housing and Urban Development; Women Affairs; Justice; Livestock Development; Aviation and Aerospace Development; and Petroleum Resources. Tracka raised transparency concerns, stating that only 70 of the 2,579 empowerment projects have clearly identified locations. It also questioned why 184 agencies, including institutions not primarily responsible for empowerment schemes, were assigned projects. Major allocations include ₦89.09 billion for fertiliser support, ₦127.1 billion for projects through the Federal Cooperative College, Oji River, and ₦88.1 billion through the Federal College of Horticulture in Dadin-Kowa. The group warned that unclear locations and beneficiary-selection processes could make oversight difficult and turn empowerment schemes into political patronage. Economists also called for projects that support local production, infrastructure and human-capital development, particularly as the 2026 budget deficit is projected at about ₦31.46 trillion.
