Reflecting on Jesus’ Crucifixion (John 19:17–27)
In John 19:17–27 we follow Jesus carrying his cross to Golgotha, the place of the Skull. There he is nailed between two criminals as soldiers cast lots for his seamless garment, fulfilling Scripture. Above the cross, Pilate’s notice reads “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews” in Aramaic, Latin and Greek. The chief priests object, but Pilate insists, “What I have written, I have written.” At the foot of the cross stand Mary, his mother, her sister, Mary of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. Jesus entrusts his mother to the beloved disciple, saying, “Woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.”
