Terrorism in Oyo State Puts Tinubu’s ‘Yoruba Lo Kan’ Promise to the Test
For over a year, a retired northern officer warned me that terrorists from the North might spill into Yorubaland. He feared the communal convulsions this would provoke. His warning now seems real. The recent abduction and brutal murder of Michael Oyedokun in Oyo State shocked me. This atrocity is the kind of horror the North has endured for years. But what will be the Southwest’s reaction? If northerners commit such crimes in the South, people will see them as an ethnic threat. This intergroup bias risks a cycle of reprisals. We saw it between Hausa and Fulani in the Northwest. President Tinubu once vowed that “Yoruba lo kan.” With a new security adviser from the Southwest, he must show that promise has meaning. A decisive response could protect all Nigerians and prevent further bloodshed.
