Edo Domestic Debt Rises to ₦172.37bn, Ranks Sixth Highest in Nigeria

Edo State’s domestic debt rose from ₦113 billion in December 2024 to ₦172.37 billion by March 2026, according to Debt Management Office data. The increase moved the state from 12th to sixth place among Nigeria’s most indebted states by domestic debt. The debt had fallen to ₦76.13 billion by September 2025 before rising to ₦91.18 billion in December. It then jumped by ₦81.19 billion in the first quarter of 2026. Edo’s budget performance report shows that the state obtained a ₦46.71 billion loan from commercial banks between January and March. Debt servicing is also rising. Edo spent ₦43.73 billion on public debt charges in 2025 and another ₦12.79 billion in the first three months of 2026. The figures raise questions about what the new loans are funding and how the state plans to manage the growing repayment burden.

The move from 12th to sixth highest is striking, especially after the debt had previously fallen to ₦76 billion.

A higher debt ranking is concerning, but the figures alone do not show how the borrowed funds were used or whether repayment capacity changed.

Residents should focus on regular DMO updates, repayment obligations, and whether future state budgets clearly explain any further domestic borrowing.
