NAFDAC Says It Does Not Directly Regulate Unbranded Palm Oil and Fufu Sold in Open Markets
NAFDAC says it does not have direct and absolute regulatory control over unbranded palm oil, fufu and other traditionally packaged staple foods sold in open markets. The agency said it regulates processed and packaged food products through inspections, laboratory tests, complaint investigations, post-market surveillance and recalls. It urged Nigerians to report suspected counterfeit or unsafe products through its official channels, rather than relying only on social media claims. NAFDAC raised concerns over reports of palm oil being mixed with harmful dyes and chemicals being added to fufu. It called on state and local authorities to strengthen monitoring of traditionally sold food items. The agency also said imported fruits such as apples, grapes and oranges fall primarily under the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service, stressing the need for stronger cooperation among food-safety agencies.
