Retired General Urges Tinubu to Pardon Nnamdi Kanu, Proposes South-East Regional Police

A retired Brigadier General, Austin Kalu Egwuagwu, has urged President Bola Tinubu to consider a presidential pardon for IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu as part of efforts to restore peace in the South-East. Speaking at a security summit in Umuahia, Egwuagwu asked the five South-East governors to jointly engage the President on Kanu's case. He said dialogue, reconciliation and a review of security-related detention cases should complement security operations. He also backed regional policing, a joint South-East security fund and the involvement of retired security personnel in community intelligence and training. According to him, unemployment, youth frustration, displacement and unresolved grievances must be addressed to achieve lasting stability in the region. Egwuagwu further called for stronger roles for traditional rulers, effective local government autonomy, youth empowerment and reforms that balance merit with national inclusion.
