Why Many South-East Youths Are Reluctant to Join the Nigerian Army
The Chief of Army Staff has raised concern that recruitment slots for the South-East have gone largely unfilled for years, despite strong competition for limited places in other regions. He urged parents, traditional rulers and community leaders to encourage eligible young men and women to enlist. Some political figures have warned that the region could lose out in the future if its youths continue to avoid military and other security-service careers. They argue that greater participation is important for national representation and security. However, youths and analysts in the region cite fear of insecurity, poor welfare, alleged discrimination, weak trust in recruitment and promotion processes, and concerns that the military is sometimes politicised. Others say better salaries, equipment, housing, insurance and transparent recruitment could make service more attractive. Not all young people have rejected the Army. Some applicants say they still want to serve Nigeria, but believe the government must rebuild public confidence and show that soldiers are respected, protected and treated fairly.
