American YouTuber Jailed Six Months in South Korea for Kissing WWII ‘Comfort Women’ Statue
In November 2024, Seoul charged 25-year-old Ismael Ramsey Khalid, known online as Johnny Somali, after he kissed and performed a lap dance on a statue honoring World War II comfort women. He has been sentenced to six months in prison and banned from leaving the country. A South Korean court convicted him of public nuisance and distributing sexual deepfakes. Prosecutors sought a three-year term, but judges handed down six months, noting no severe harm to specific victims. He will also be barred from working with minors and people with disabilities upon release. Khalid is known for provocative stunts abroad, including harassment in Japan and Israel. His November apology did little to quell public outrage over his actions. Maybe Nigeria should take note of these “nuisance” influencers who chase fame by ridiculing others. They show little respect for values or institutions, yet many young Nigerians now see them as role models of success.
