Sachet Alcohol Abuse: A Threat to Nigeria’s Youth and National Economy
The strength of a nation rests on its youth’s productivity and wellbeing. Yet, widespread sachet alcohol consumption undermines both. Affordable, portable and often unregulated, these sachets fuel alcohol dependence among young Nigerians, including underage drinkers. This trend not only harms individual health—contributing to liver disease and mental disorders—but also erodes cognitive performance and workplace productivity. Economically, the costs are staggering: reduced efficiency, higher healthcare spending and diverted resources. Despite a government ban on sub-200ml alcohol packaging, weak enforcement limits its impact. A comprehensive strategy is needed: stricter regulation enforcement, tighter advertising restrictions, public awareness campaigns and expanded rehabilitation services. Protecting our youth’s health is both an economic imperative and a patriotic duty.
