LAWMA: Buyers at Illegal Roadside and Median Markets Face Arrest From Next Week
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) says it will begin arresting and prosecuting people who buy goods from traders operating on roadsides, medians, walkways, setbacks and other unauthorised public spaces. LAWMA Managing Director Muyiwa Gbadegesin said the enforcement will begin next week under Section 151(2) of the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law 2017. Offenders may face a ₦90,000 fine, six months’ imprisonment, or both. According to the agency, enforcement will target both illegal traders and their customers because patronage keeps the markets operating. LAWMA said the markets often worsen roadside waste disposal, block drainage channels, disrupt traffic and create public-health risks. Residents and businesses have been advised to use recognised markets and approved waste-collection channels as the agency steps up sanitation enforcement across Lagos.
