Dakar 2026: Senegal Hosts Africa’s First Youth Olympic Games
Senegal is making final preparations as Dakar gets set to host the 2026 Youth Olympic Games, the first Olympic event to be staged on African soil. The Games open on October 31 and will run until November 13. About 2,700 athletes aged 15 to 18 will compete in 35 sports across Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly. IOC President Kirsty Coventry has toured the Youth Olympic Village and said preparations are progressing well. The event was originally scheduled for 2022 but was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Dakar 2026 is expected to give young athletes from around the world a chance to compete, connect and celebrate African sport on a global stage.
