Obidient Coordinators Demand Release of Ben Smith, Others Arrested in Uyo
The Forum of State Coordinators of the Obidient Movement has demanded the release of its Akwa Ibom coordinator, Dr Ben Smith, and other supporters reportedly detained after an Independence Day political gathering in Uyo. The group alleged that security personnel used force and tear gas while dispersing supporters of the Obi-Kwankwaso movement. It said those involved were participating peacefully and called for an investigation into allegations of mistreatment. Police reportedly arrested eight people over alleged breaches of security directives and actions capable of causing a breach of peace. The police denied using firearms. The coordinators have asked the Akwa Ibom State Government, the Inspector-General of Police and human-rights bodies to disclose where those detained are being held and ensure due process is followed. The incident comes as political groups prepare for the 2027 general elections, with the movement urging security agencies and political actors to respect peaceful assembly and democratic rights.
