Mental Health in Nigeria: Millions Affected as Treatment Gap Persists
Estimates from the World Health Organization and local public-health bodies suggest that 20% to 30% of Nigerians may experience a mental health condition. That represents roughly 40 to 50 million people. Depression and anxiety are among the commonly reported conditions. Substance-use disorders, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and trauma-related stress also affect many people. Access to care remains a major concern. Fewer than 10% of people who need mental-health support are estimated to receive adequate professional care, while stigma, misconceptions and a shortage of specialists continue to limit treatment.
