Ghanaian Twin Brothers Plead Guilty in $9m Romance Fraud Targeting Elderly Victims
Two 22-year-old Ghanaian twin brothers, Jamal and Kamal Abubakari, have pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud over an international romance scam that allegedly cost victims more than $9 million. Court documents state that the scheme ran from July 2024 to April 2026. The group allegedly used fake identities on dating platforms and social media to build trust with victims before persuading them to send money. Most victims were elderly Americans across 25 states, with others in Germany and Austria. The brothers and a co-defendant agreed to forfeit jewellery and other valuables seized during their arrests. Each faces up to 20 years in prison, with sentencing set for February 2027.
