Rescued Oyo Teacher Reveals Blindfolded Captivity and Unexpected Release After 56 Days
A teacher rescued after 56 days in kidnappers’ custody in Oyo State says he and other captives were blindfolded and fed only plain rice and beans twice daily. They were told their abductors were ISWAP members and forbidden from praying aloud. The captives trekked blindfolded until the kidnappers’ commander suddenly announced their freedom and guided them toward government rescue teams. The teacher says he helped younger pupils cross rivers and even found relief from arthritis after being given medication. Oyo State’s governor has ordered a UN-backed investigation into the abduction and directed that victims receive medical and psychosocial support. The rescued teachers and pupils were seized in May from schools in Oriire Local Government Area.
