Cardinal Onaiyekan Replies Presidency: “I Spoke for My Fellow Bishops”

Catholic Cardinal John Onaiyekan has responded to criticism from the Presidency over comments he made after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu. The 82-year-old cleric said he spoke honestly about the concerns shared by Catholic bishops and had no reason to feel embarrassed or intimidated. He added that Nigerians should not take their freedom to speak openly for granted. Onaiyekan said the country’s poverty and hardship affect people across faiths, including Christian and Muslim religious leaders. “We are all in the same boat now,” he said.
