Why I Think Asia, Not Africa, Is Poised to Shape the Future
I argue that Africa cannot become the global model many people hope for until it confronts two major social challenges: a weak culture of serious reading and the influence of inherited religious beliefs. By “the future”, I mean a society whose institutions, prosperity and way of life others want to emulate. In my view, reading should build historical awareness, critical thinking and a commitment to African liberation. I also question how Christianity and Islam have been interpreted and practised in Africa, arguing that colonialism, slavery and religious fanaticism have shaped harmful attitudes, dependency and disconnection from African identity. I believe Africans need deeper intellectual engagement, stronger community values and a re-examination of religious teachings through the lens of liberation rather than oppression. Until these issues are addressed, I believe Asia is better positioned to lead the future.
